During WWII the Lancaster developed into one of the most powerful
weapons of the allies. It was a further development of the 'Manchester'
but constructed of metal. The first production aircraft took off in late
1941, carrying a total payload of over 27 tons, including more than six
tons of bombs. Lancasters were mainly used for night attacks on German
cities. They also sank the German battleship Tirpitz and destroyed the
Mohne and Eder dams.
